SAO PAULO/STARNBERG, July 15, 2024
Pedro Sakamoto of Brazil clinched the title of the Ano V – Brasil Tennis Classic. The tournament, part of the ITF World Tennis Tour, took place at the Esporte Clube Pinheiros in Sao Paulo and awarded a total prize money of $25,000, with the champion receiving $3,600 and the finalist $2,120.
Sakamoto defeated Argentine Tomas Farjat 7-6(4), 7-6(6) in Sunday’s singles final. With the support of the home crowd, Sakamoto faced an opponent also eager to break his bad streak this season. Farjat tried various strategies, including serve-and-volley and taking the weight off the ball, but his best efforts only managed to push the match into two tie-breaks. In the end, Sakamoto’s tennis prevailed and the 31-year-old celebrated his second consecutive title, having won in Belem the previous Sunday.
With the 25 ATP Ranking points from the title, Sakamoto is expected to approach his career-high ranking of World No. 284. Surrounded by family and friends, he expressed gratitude for the events held in Brazil and the support from the crowd during tough moments in the match. “You were the reason for today’s victory. Whenever I was in a tough spot, I looked at a familiar face encouraging me, pushing me forward, so this title is also yours. And also for Paulao, representing my team from Rio de Janeiro here in Sao Paulo. I’m very happy with these two titles,” said the champion. “Now I’ll enjoy the title and rest for a few days,” concluded Sakamoto.

Farjat stated: “It was an incredible week, and I thank my team in Argentina because without them, I wouldn’t be here. This year hasn’t been great with many results, but this week I found myself again, had good emotions, and despite not winning the title, I congratulate Sakamoto on his home victory.”
