The ATP Challenger clay court swing continues in Italy with the 40th edition of the €42,500 Internazionali di Tennis Manerbio, a town located in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy. It is the lone Challenger event of the week.

Four first round singles matches were scheduled on the opening day of the main draw with Matteo Donati, winning the all-Italian-affair with Filippo Volandri 6-3, 7-6. The 21-year-old from Alessandria sent down four aces and capitalized on three of his eight break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 28 minutes.

“In the first set I played very well. I was aggressive, I had clear ideas and a good feeling, as the court was pretty fast, which helped me,” Donati was pleased with his performance. “In the second set he was up but I accepted to fight and was very focused. Maybe it did too many mistakes but overall it was a great match.” The Italian youngster will next take on either Cordenons runner-up Daniel Gimeno-Traver or Frederico Ferreira Silva.

The only seed in action on Monday was Elias Ymer. The tournament’s number seven ousted Edoardo Eremin, winning 6-4, 7-6. The 20-year-old Swede won 76 of the total 140 points played to advance in one hour and 51 minutes. Ymer awaits the winner of the all-French-encounter between qualifier Jonathan Eysseric and Gleb Sakharov.

Another Frenchman prevailed with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory, as Kenny de Schepper beat Argentine Pedro Cachin in two hours and 26 minutes. De Schepper will next play either Nils Langer from Germany or sixth seed local Marco Cecchinato.

Adrian Ungur eased past Christian Garin 6-1, 6-1. The world number 237 from Romania won 74% of his first service points and converted six of his 12 break point opportunities to finish the encounter in only 59 minutes. Next up for Ungur is the tournament’s number eight Filip Krajinovic or Akira Santillan.
