MUNICH, September 13, 2016

Two days after claiming her first US Open title, Angelique Kerber returned to Germany when flight LH 411 landed in Munich at 07:30 on Tuesday morning, 25 minutes ahaed of the actual scheduled time of arrival. The 28-year-old from Kiel was welcomed by 52 journalists as well as 13 camera teams at the Hilton Airport Hotel.

“When I left the aircraft I was immediately aware of the German air,” Kerber told with a smile. “In New York the humidity was extremely high.” Nonetheless, Munich’s weather was at its best with a lot of sunshine and more than 30 degrees Celsius. Ideal conditions to relax a few days with her grandparents in the Polish city of Puszczykowo.

“I will enjoy lots of sleep, want to dine well and would like to meet with family and friends. I am just looking forward to enjoy the life.” She would also treat herself to a special gift with some of her $3.5 million prize money.

“It will probably be in the direction of jewellery. But exactly what it will be I do not know yet.”

Nonetheless, the new world number one has the goal to stay at the very top as long as possible. “I will do my best and accept the challenge. I am ready,” a confident Kerber told but was still impressed by the experience she made during the last fortnight at Flushing Meadows.

“I still have goose bumps. It is amazing what happened. It was full of emotions. It is difficult to put the result into words,” she told and added: “This triumph feels different compared to the Australian Open, as I have nothing to prove anymore. I am the world number one now.”
