Roger Federer has already started his comeback trail, having his first practice sessions after he had announced that he would miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. In 2017, the world number seven will return to the MercedesCup in Stuttgart. The ATP 250 event will be held at the venue of the Tennis Club Weissenhof from 10 to 18 June 2017.

“Roger Federer takes the time necessary to compete next season. At the end of August he hit some balls with Tommy Haas. We can look forward to a highly motivated Roger Federer at the MercedesCup next year,” tournament director Edwin Weindorfer is convinced.

It is possible that Federer, who lost to eventual champion Dominic Thiem in the semi-final last year, will not be the only Swiss appearing on the grass in Stuttgart in 2017. Weindorfer recently held talks with Stan Wawrinka in New York about a possible start of the world number three in Germany.

“Stan Wawrinka is very interested in playing in Stuttgart within the next years. We will intensify negotiations and will try to raise capital in order to engage the reigning US Open champion in a long-term-commitment. Stan is aware of the postitive development of our grass court tournament and remembers the MercedesCup very well,” Weindorfer points out. Back in 2007 on clay, Wawrinka finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal.

For visitors, a 10 per cent early discount on tickets for the 2017 edition is still available until 30 September 2016. Tickets can bought via the official website.
