The top half of the draw completed the second round of the €42,500 BFD Energy Challenger, held at the Due Ponti Sporting Club in Rome. Sibiu Open champion and top seed Robin Haase ended the successful run of Italian wild card and world number 1857, Davide Pontoglio, winning 6-2, 6-2. The 29-year-old from the Netherlands broke serve five times to advance in only 54 minutes.

Haase will next take on Andrej Martin. The tournament’s number five defeated Christian Garin from Chile 6-4, 7-6. Martin won 70 per cent of his first service points and capitalized on five of his 13 break point chances to seal victory in two hours and two minutes.

Swedish youngster Elias Ymer will join his brother Mikael in the quarterfinals. The 20-year-old ousted Italian veteran Filippo Volandri 7-5, 7-6. Ymer sent down six aces, landing 56 per cent of his first serves to prevail in two hours and 10 minutes. Next up for the world number 159 will be Tristan Lamasine of France. The 23-year-old benefited from the retirement of fourth seed Daniel Gimeno-Traver, leading 6-7, 7-6, 4-2.
