SANTA PONSA, April 12, 2018 (Press Release)
Angelique Kerber, former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, held a press conference on Tuesday ahead of her participation in the third edition of the Mallorca Open, which will be held from June 18th to 24th on the grass of Santa Ponsa.
“I’m confident I can have a good tournament,” said the German. “Playing in Mallorca is like being at home. I hope to win some day here and make a good preparation for Wimbledon. I am feeling great, I love playing on grass and last year I practiced here at the Mallorca Open,” said Kerber, winner of ten WTA tournaments and silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Kerber joins Caroline García (World No. 7) and Carla Suárez Navarro (Spain No. 2 player) as the three major players confirmed in the poster of the third edition of the Mallorca Open.
The German, currently World No. 11, sat at the Hotel Zafiro Palace Palmanova in front of the media accompanied by Toni Homar, CEO of Zafiro Hotels, José Ramón Sabatini, AEDAS Homes Baleares promotions manager, Edwin Weindorfer, Emotion Group CEO and Toni Nadal, Tournament Director of the Mallorca Open.
Mixed doubles alongside Tommy Haas
The organizers also announced that on Sunday, 17 June 2018, Kerber will team up with former World No. 2 Tommy Haas for a mixed doubles exhibition match.
“This will be the first time playing together with Tommy. I am really looking forward to it,” Kerber said.
Toni Nadal, Tournament Director, explained the virtues of Kerber and is convinced of her good role at the Mallorca Open. “Angelique always plays 100%, she is a great fighter and although she has had a difficult 2017, this year she has a lot of chances to be up again in the rankings,” said Nadal at the Zafiro Palace Hotel, where numerous media members, sponsors and friends of the tournament were gathered.
