NÜRNBERG, May 17, 2018
Final preparations are underway ahead of the start of the Nürnberger Versicherungscup held from 19 to 26 May 2016 at the venue of the 1.Fc Nürnberg. Organizers of the $250,000 WTA International Event announced on Wednesday that the wild cards for the qualifying will be awarded to four young promising German players: Katharina Gerlach, Jule Niemayer, Lena Rüffer and Anna Gabric.
“They are all part of the Porsche Talent Team. Only Antonia Lottner is missing but she will compete in the qualifying at Roland Garros,” tournamemnt ambassador and Germany’s Head of Women’s Tennis Barbara Rittner explained. The primary intention behind the sponsorship of Porsche and the German Tennis Federation (DTB) is to make the set-up for talented juniors more professional whereby the focus is on enhancing individual coaching and guidance both when practicing and at tournaments.
“Katharina Hobgarski received a main draw wild card. It is a great opportunity for all of them to gain some experience at WTA-level,” Rittner commented.
Andrea Petkovic will also return to Nürnberg. The runner-up from 2013 will play her first tournament on home soil in two years. The 30-year-old was also awarded a wild card and is looking forward to the event, hoping that a lot of fans will come to watch the matches.
