SANTA PONSA, May 23, 2018 (Press Release)
With less than a month before the start of the third edition of the Mallorca Open, which will be held from June 17 to 24, a press conference was held at the facilities of Santa Ponsa to publicize different developments that affect all areas of the event.
With a table formed by Alfonso Rodríguez, Mayor of Calvià, Toni Nadal, Mallorca Open Director, Conchita Martínez, ambassador of the tournament for this edition, Santi Taura and Macarena de Castro, both chefs with Michelin stars, Heidi Stadler, CEO of First Mallorca and Heinke Fiedler, Marketing Director of Weber Grill, the organizers revealed the final details of the tournament, with the participation of the guests.
“I want to highlight the importance of an event like the Mallorca Open, which positions Calvià all over the world,” said Alfonso Rodríguez, Mayor of the town. “Also the effort and great work they have done to involve children and residents of Calvià through school visits, discounts and other actions,” he added. “It’s very important for us to have the Mallorca Open.”
Strong competition for Kerber
Toni Nadal, Tournament Director, acknowledged that the next Mallorca Open will be unmatched, in part because of its field. Victoria Azarenka, former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, Caroline Garcia, Angelique Kerber, who also reached the top of the WTA rankings and has two Grand Slam tournaments to her name, Carla Suárez, Anastasija Sevastova, the defending champion, Agnieszska Radwanska, Samantha Stosur or Lucie Safarova, among many others.
“This will be without doubt the best edition of the Mallorca Open, but not only for the stars,” said the Tournament Director. “The improvement at the infrastructure level, as well as in other aspects, will make us take a big step in terms of quality. The catering, for example, will be incredible.”
New tournament ambassador
At the press conference, Conchita Martínez, former World No. 2 and Wimbledon champion, was introduced as ambassador of the tournament. With a broad background as a player and then as a coach, was delighted to join the event.
“It is essential for the development of tennis in Spain to have events in the different categories,” Martinez said. “And the Mallorca Open is the only international tournament we have. In addition, it is always very nice to play at home, on grass… it is a spectacular opportunity for the players.”
New partners
One of the great tournament improvements for 2018 is the inclusion of a catering service formed by Santi Taura and Macarena de Castro. Both with a Michelin star, achieved thanks to the restaurants they run -Dins and Macarena de Castro, respectively-, will take charge of the event’s catering for the players, and also for the VIP area.
“I played tennis a lot, I had the whole room papered with images of Conchita,” revealed Macarena de Castro, nominated for the National Gastronomy Award in 2018. “It’s an honor to be here and enjoy a tournament like this. We want to contribute our bit to such an important event.”
“Of course, we are delighted to be involved with events like this that do so much for tourism and for the Majorcan society,” Santi Taura added. “We will try to put the maximum effort so the players and the guests enjoy the experience“.
Finally, Heidi Stadler, CEO of First Mallorca, and Heinke Fiedler, Marketing Director of Weber Grill, explained what it means to be present as sponsors in the tournament.
“We are very excited,” said Heidi Stadler. “This event can contribute a lot to the island and we are looking to transfer the concept of well-being, union and experience to our clients”.
“We make a strong commitment to the Mallorca Open, especially highlighting the social aspect of the event,” added Fiedler. “In a time when everything is going on Social Media it is important to have experiences of the highest quality”.
The Mallorca Open will start next June 17 and tickets can be purchased through the tournament’s official website.
