Ymer And Eriksson Give Sweden Commanding 2-0 Lead Over Israel

Sweden celebrates 2-0 lead of Israel after Day 1

STOCKHOLM, September 13, 2019

Sweden took an overwhelming 2-0 lead against Israel in their Davis Cup Europe-Africa Group I tie as Markus Eriksson edged Dudi Sela 7-6(6), 6-0 after the host’s top-ranked player Mikael Ymer defeated Edan Lesham 6-3 7-5 in the opening singles rubbers on Friday. The results put Sweden in a commanding position to get some measure of revenge for the defeat away in Israel three years ago.

“Well, it was great. Really a good match. I’m happy with my performance, it was electric out there. Really excited that Markus (Eriksson) is up, now we’re gonna cheer for him,” Ymer said after his match.

Swedish Davis Cup captain Johan Hedsberg commented after Markus Eriksson won the second match: “I did not expect this situation. I know my players can play very well, but to do it in a match, that’s another thing. Markus played a really good match. He’s a really good player.

“Tomorrow… they are so tough, the Israeli guys, we don’t expect anything. We go out and take match by match, and hopefully we can win one. It’s a good team that we’re against. This evening no celebration at all.”
