HAMBURG, April 15, 2020
The German government has banned major events in the country until August 31st due to the COVID-19 pandemic, putting doubt on whether the Hamburg European Open 2020 will take place. The ATP 500 clay-court event is scheduled for July 11 to 19.
The organizers of the Rothenbaum tournament are now entering into an intensive exchange with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the German Tennis Federation (DTB) as well as the ATP to work on possibilities of hosting the 114th edition of Germany’s most traditional tennis event later this year.
“We are in touch with all of our partners and examine all possible scenarios. We are discussing the possibility to postpone the tournament to September. Another statement will follow tomorrow,” tournament director Sandra Reichel was quoted in a press release on Wednesday.
The ATP and WTA jointly announced the continued suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours until July 13, 2020, due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
