MANERBIO, May 1, 2020
This year’s ATP Challenger in Manerbio – Trofeo Dimmidisi has been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament was scheduled for August 10 to 16 in Manerbio, a town and comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, northern Italy.
In a press release on Friday, it was stated: “The situation of uncertainty due to the coronavirus crisis has put the whole Italian system in difficulty, especially affecting our region.” Situated about 70 kilometres away from two of the most affected areas (Bergamo and the Val Seriana in the north west and Codogno in the south west), Manerbio also had a much higher number of deaths than usual. The logistical and economic difficulties have convinced the organizers to cancel the 2020 edition with the hope and desire to return with even more enthusiasm next year.
“We will keep your week in the 2021 calendar and look forward to continuing our excellent relationship,” ATP Challenger Tour manager Joanna Langhorne told the organizers of the tournament.
Last year, local favourite Federico Gaio lifted the trophy in Manerbio to clinch his third career title on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 28-year-old upset fellow Italian and top seed Paolo Lorenzi in the singles final in straight sets.
