Michael Kohlmann, Germany’s Davis Cup captain since the beginning of 2015, has been named Head of Men’s Tennis. This was announced by the German Tennis Federation (DTB) earlier this week. He is taking over from Boris Becker, who recently announced his resignation.
“Michael Kohlmann has done outstanding work for the DTB over the past few years and is the logical successor to the position of Head of Men’s Tennis. As a former professional player, he has great expertise, has very good access to the next generation and can develop young players. We are very happy to continue the successful work with Michael Kohlmann in the men’s area, to intensify it and to give him more responsibility,” DTB Vice-President Dirk Hordorff stated in a press release.
Kohlmann said: “I’m looking forward to the new challenge and to taking on additional responsibilities at the DTB. The cooperation with Boris in the past few years has always been very close and good. We tackled a lot together and I was always fully involved, so that I am already familiar with the tasks ahead.”
Becker steps down
Becker explained that he is no longer able to devote enough time to the job and has, hence, decided to step down. The former World No. 1 released a statement saying, “Working for the DTB has given me great pleasure over the past three-and-a-half years. Unfortunately, I currently don’t have the time to continue this extensive task.”

Under Becker’s guidance, the German national team qualified for the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid last year but he doesn’t rule out future involvement with German tennis.
“It was a pleasure for me to visit all federal training centers and deal with national coaches, but above all with the children and young people,” the six-time Grand Slam champion said.
“It was a great honor to lead German tennis in the men’s and junior division together with Michael Kohlmann and I’m convinced that he will continue to do this great job on his own.”
