The Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil, a prestigious tennis tournament in Ecuador, has celebrated his 20th anniversary being a consistent and influential part of the ATP Challenger Tour. Josh Meiseles, ATP Challenger Tour’s marketing director, traveled from the United States to present a commemorative plaque to Andres Gomez, the tournament director and former tennis champion from Ecuador.

“It is a great pleasure to present this award in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil,” said Meiseles. “The Challenger Awards recognize the excellence of these circuits, emphasizing the passion and dedication of the more than 200 tournaments held in nearly 50 countries worldwide. We acknowledge the commitment of the Illustrious Municipality of Guayaquil, the sponsors, and the Guayaquil Tennis Club for supporting the development of tennis in Ecuador and setting a standard for the global ATP Challenger Tour.”

Gomez stated: “My immense gratitude to the Honorable Municipality of Guayaquil, which has been with us throughout this time, a period of growth not only for tennis in the city but also for the country. To the sports press, which has supported us these 20 years, and to the Guayaquil Tennis Club, our home, our venue. To all of you, who gradually began to fill this event—we achieved this together. Thank you very much.”

The Challenger Ciudad de Guayaquil holds the title of the second-longest-running ATP Challenger tournament in South America, following the Uruguay Open in Montevideo, which has held 23 tournaments, though it missed a year in 2020. Globally, the Challenger in Tampere, Finland, holds the record for the longest-running tournament, celebrating 42 uninterrupted years.
