KOBLENZ, February 14, 2017

The German city of Koblenz, situated on both banks of the Rhine, hosted the first edition of the Koblenz Open, a €43,000 indoor hard-court event at the local Conlog Arena from 13 to 21 January 2017.

Ruben Bemelmans defeated Nils Langer in Sunday’s final to celebrate his fifth ATP Challenger crown. The singles champion from Belgium took away 80 ATP Ranking points as well as €6,190 in prize money. 9,000 spectators attended the matches throughout the week.

Joanna Langhorne, director of the ATP Challenger Tour, congratulated the tournament’s organizer Heiko Hampl on the success of the inaugural edition:

“Firstly thank you and many congratulations on the first edition of the ‘Koblenz Open’, this is a great new addition to our calendar and we have received many positive comments. The atmosphere in the stadium was very good and the event obviously attracted a great deal of local interest which was reflected in the number of spectators. I understand you had some issues with the last minute laying of the court, but that it was resolved and we have not had complaints from players. Hotel, transportation and food on site was all praised by the players and the general level of organisation was excellent. Ballkids in particular were very well trained – something always appreciated by players. We are very pleased to add this event to our calendar in an important week and we look forward to welcoming you back onto our calendar again in 2018.”

The Koblenz Open will return next year, taking place from 14 to 21 January 2018.
