Mini Rogers Cup

MONTREAL, May 31, 2018 (Press Release)

Tennis Canada announced Wednesday the return of the Mini Rogers Cup for 2018, with kids under the age of 10 set to participate in a tennis tournament for all skill levels. Children from across Quebec will be able to sign up to not only play on the courts at IGA Stadium, but will also have a chance to win a medal, which will be presented in a ceremony on Centre Court at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank in Montreal.

For the past six years, Mini Rogers Cup has allowed players under the age of 10 to compete in a friendly yet competitive environment. This year, for the very first time, the event will take on-site at the Rogers Cup (at IGA Stadium) on Saturday, August 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Young players will have the chance to get closer to both the sport and the nation’s biggest tennis tournament all while playing on the same courts as the best players in the world.

This tournament is open to players between the ages of 5 and 10, who play either at the recreational or the elite level. There are a limited number of places available in each category, with a total of 104 places available in 2018. Parents are encouraged to register their children as soon as possible, as the deadline to register is Friday July 20 and it will be on first come, first served basis.

“Mini Rogers Cup not only encourages young kids to continue to develop their tennis skills, it also inspires those who have never played before to pick up a racquet and try the sport for the first time,” stated Rogers Cup Montreal Tournament Director Eugène Lapierre. “This year, we wanted to make sure that the participants had a more enhanced Rogers Cup experience, which is why we have brought the tournament onto the courts at IGA Stadium. These kids will get the chance of a lifetime to compete on the same courts as their tennis idols.”

Once again this year, players can choose between two categories of play: elite and recreational. Boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 6 will compete in a mixed draw, while the older age categories will be divided into separate draws. Each player will participate in a minimum of three matches throughout the tournament.

The competition will culminate in the Mini Rogers Cup champions receiving a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get closer to the official tournament with a unique experience. The winners in each category will receive a Mini Rogers Cup medal during a special ceremony on Centre Court on Saturday, August 11 and will then be invited to stay for one session on that day.

The organization of this activity will be once again in the hands of Tennis Canada, Tennis Québec and Tennis Montréal. With their combined efforts, these prominent tennis organizations hope to offer a unique opportunity for children to develop their skills and fall in love with the sport.

“This event has become a mainstay in Quebec, allowing thousands of young players to compete for a chance to become Mini Rogers Cup champions,” said Réjean Levesque, Deputy General Director at Tennis Québec. “Each year, our goal is to get more young people involved in our sport. Mini Rogers Cup is a great way to not only increase participation, but also increase interest in a sport which is becoming more and more popular with a younger demographic.”
