Alexander Zverev is set to return to the his hometown of Hamburg this year. This was announced by the organizers of the Hamburg European Open on Wednesday. The tournament will be held between July 22-28, 2019.

“We have been in close contact with Sascha for many months. He often emphasized how much he loves Hamburg and how much it would mean to him to come back to the Rothenbaum. When he decided not to compete in Washington this year, we deepened the talks and are very pleased to have reached an agreement “, organizer Peter-Michael Reichel stated in a press release.

Zverev will make his first appearance in Hamburg since losing in the first round against Spaniard Inigo Cervantes in 2016. The current World No. 5 has played five times at the prestigious clay-court event. In 2013, at the age of 17, Zverev caught the tennis world’s attention by reaching the semi-finals.

The reigning ATP-Finals champion will join fellow top-10 players Dominic Thiem of Austria and Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the singles main draw.
