The organizers of the Internazionali Di Tennis Citta L’Aquila have revealed the entry list for the €46,600 ATP Challenger clay-court event that will take place between August 19-25, with top 200 players Andrej Martin of Slovakia and Hungarian Attila Balazs leading an interesting field of players that will fight for the title and 80 ATP Ranking points.
The tournament’s second edition will be held at the Circolo Tennis L’Aquila in the same period of time as the US Open qualifying and will be the lone ATP Challenger event this week. Last year’s champion was Facundo Bagnis of Argentina, who captured his 12th Challenger career title by defeating Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi in three sets in the singles final.
A strong contingent of local players will also be part of this year’s line-up. Luca Vanni, Gian Marco Moroni and Gianluigi Quinzi will come to the capital city of the Abruzzo region.
The years after the quake
Several ski resorts like the Gran Sasso d’Italia mountain, the highest peak of the Apennines at 2,912 meters, are situated near L’Aquila. However, earthquakes are also part of the history of L’Aquila, as the city is situated partially on an ancient lake-bed that amplifies seismic activity.
On April 6, 2009, an earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck central Italy with its epicentre near L’Aquila. Initial reports said the natural disaster caused damage to between 3,000 and 10,000 buildings in L’Aquila. More than 300 people were killed by the earthquake.
