STARNBERG, April 23, 2020

Due to the exceptional situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic and following the measures imposed by the Government of Germany prohibiting the holding of sporting events until August 31, 2020 this year’s MercedesCup in Stuttgart has officially been cancelled. The 42nd edition of the ATP 250 grass-court event is now scheduled to take place on June 3 to 15, 2021 at the venue of the Tennis Club Weissenhof.

“Taking into account the developments of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis as well as the measures and restrictions associated with it, it is painful that the MercedesCup cannot take place as planned this year, but the health and safety of everyone is top priority,” tournament director Edwin Weindorfer stated in a press release on Thursday.

The MercedesCup, which made the switch from clay to grass from 2015, usually opens the grass-court swing on the ATP Tour. The first edition of the tournament in Stuttgart was held in 1898, with Mercedes-Benz assuming the role of title sponsor in 1979.
