HEILBRONN, June 4, 2023

Twelve players have booked their tickets for the second round of the qualifying at the 2023 NECKARCUP. On a sunny Sunday in Heilbronn, local wild card entry Liam Gavrielides headlined the action. The 19-year-old German knocked top seed Benjamin Hassan from Lebanon 6-3, 6-4.

The World No. 1165, who had celebrated his first match win at ATP Challenger Tour level last weekend in Troisdorf before he fell to Hassan in the final round of the qualification, dominated most of the rallies and capitalized on all of his three break-point chances to advance in one hour and 21 minutes.

“This win feels really good. I played a very good match and I’m happy that I could earn the victory against Benjamin this time,” said Gavrielides, who graduated from high school last year.

“The school stress is gone and I can concentrate fully on the sport. My game has improved a lot during this time, but I was sidelined for a while around the turn of the year due to a persistent foot injury. In the meantime, however, I am pain-free again and I notice with every training session how confidence in myself is coming back. Apart from that, I travel a lot and go from tournament to tournament. Since March, I have been to tournaments in Troisdorf, Austria, Cyprus, Meerbusch, Spain and Turkey.”

Next up for the teenager will be Akira Santillan of Australia, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Conner Huertas del Pino from Peru.

Other players, who reached the second round of the qualifying at the €145,000 clay-court event are: Germans Henri Squire, Mats Moraing, Lucas Gerch, Timo Stodder, Sebastian Fanselow and Max Hans Rehberg, as well as Frenchman Maxime Janvier, Andrea Arnaboldi of Italy, Jerome Kym from Switzerland and Vladyslav Orlov from the Ukraine.
