Top seed Taylor Fritz opened his title bid at the Atlanta Open with a 6-4, 7-6(3) second-round win over Yibing Wu of China on Thursday. The ninth-ranked US-American overcame two set points for Wu to force a second set tie-break, ultimately clinching the match after one hour and 30 minutes.

“Just a couple points here and there. I had some break chances, he had some break chances,” Fritz said in his on-court interview. “It could have gone either way, I kind of just barely got out of the points I needed to win.”

Fritz will next take on Kei Nishikori of Japan, who advanced to his first quarterfinal on the ATP Tour since reaching the stage of the last four in Washington 2021.
