Taberner Triumphs At Schwaben Open Augsburg

AUGSBURG/STARNBERG, August 26, 2023

Carlos Taberner has clinched the title of the second edition of the Schwaben Open in Augsburg, Germany. The The 26-year-old Valencia native emerged victorious from the all-Spanish singles final of the €36,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Oriol Roca Batalla.

On a sunny Saturday at the TC Augsburg Siebentisch, Taberner converted five of his seven break-point opportunities and won 56 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and one minute.

“It just feels incredibly good. Winning titles is so difficult because only one player can finish the tournament week as the champion. I improved in all aspects of my game this week and was able to put more pressure on my opponents, which was the key to success,” said Taberner.

The World No. 361 lifted his sixth ATP Challenger Tour career trophy, his first of the season. He pocketed €4,910 in prize money as well as 50 ATP Ranking points.

Frantzen/Jebens earn doubles title

Earlier in the day, Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens delighted their home crowd by clinching the doubles title. The top seeds beat Frenchman Constantin Bittoun Kouzmine and Volodoymyr Uzhylovskyi from Ukraine 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match in 64 minutes.

By winning their third team title on the ATP Challenger Tour following their triumphs in Biel, Switzerland and Heilbronn, Germany earlier this season, Frantzen and Jebens split €1,900 in prize money and earned 50 ATP Doubles Ranking points.

“Even though the tournament is only a Challenger 50 event, this success means so much to me because I could win a title in front of my parents’ eyes for the first time and I feel like I know everyone on the stands,” said Frantzen, who competes for the TC Augsburg during the Bundesliga league season.

“I hope that this great tournament might be held in a higher category in the future and will continue for many years to come. I will always be happy to come back.”
