Daniel Altmaier and Yannick Hanfmann have both secured their first Davis Cup match wins to give Germany a 2-0 lead over Bosnia and Herzegovina after Day 1 in the Davis Cup World Group I first round.
Altmaier paved the way for a successful day for the German team in Mostar. After a close first set, the World No. 49 found his rhythm and prevailed 7-6(5), 6-2 against Nerman Fatic in front of 800 spectators at the Tennis Club Mostar.
“The opponent was very tricky today because he retrieved a lot. I felt more liberated after winning the first set and was able to control the game afterward,” said the 25-year-old.
Later in the afternoon, Hanfmann was in total control against Bosnia’s number one, Damir Dzumhur. He quickly took a 5-0 lead in the first set. Although Dzumhur won two consecutive games afterward, the 31-year-old German was never really threatened. Hanfmann succeeded 6-2, 6-1.
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous to play my first official match for Germany. But I settled in well and thankfully won two and one because it was really quite hot,” Hanfmann said.

Germany’s top-ranked player Alexander Zverev is missing the tie due to a muscle injury. The decision on whether Germany retains its place in the World Group will be made on Sunday. The team led by Michael Kohlmann needs to secure one more point for that.
Sunday’s action begins with the doubles tie between Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz taking on Mirza Basic and Nerman Fatic. The match starts at 10:30 am local time.
