ISMANING, October 30, 2023
The ATP Challenger Tour is back in Bavaria for the seventh edition of the Wolffkran Open by Tannenhof, the circuit’s only tournament held on carpet. Germany’s International Indoor Tennis Championships, which offer a total prize money of €73,000, is taking place at the Tennis Club Ismaning, located about 10 kilometres northeast of Munich.
2020 Wolffkran Open champion Marc-Andrea Huesler opened his title bid on Monday with a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 first-round win over 19-year-old Croatian Mili Poljicak. The No. 8 seed from Switzerland, who struggled with his form in recent times and won his last match end of August at the Winston-Salem Open, fired 15 aces and won all of his service points to advance in only 42 minutes.
Huesler will next take on Henri Squire of Germany, who cruised past Denis Yevseyev of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-4 in 58 minutes.
In other action, Russian alternate Alibek Kachmazov knocked out sixth-seeded Briton Jan Choinski 6-4, 57-, 6-2. The World No. 268 broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail after two hours and 21 minutes. Up next for Kachmazov will be either Frenchman Mathias Bourgue or Oleksii Krutykh from Ukraine.
Rudolf Molleker emerged victorious from the battle of the home favourites, beating wild card entry Daniel Masur 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3.
“It was a very close match that could have gone either way. Playing against a good friend at his home tournament is already a significant challenge. Despite several deficits, I always believed in the victory,” said Molleker.
The 23-year-old German awaits the winner of the encounter between top seed Dominic Stricker from Switzerland and Portuguese qualifier Joao Sousa.
