A player from Europe was crowned champion in South America, as Luciano Darderi captured the title of the 2023 DirecTV Open in Lima, Peru. In a singles final between two unseeded contenders, the 21-year-old Italian, who was born in Argentina, defeated Argentine Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday.
Darderi advanced to the championship match of the $80,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event held at the Jockey Club del Peru with wins in the top half of the draw over Swiss qualifier Kilian Feldbausch, Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli, top seed and home favourite Juan Pablo Varillas as well as Alejandro Tabilo of Chile.
The World No. 137 broke Navone’s serve four times and won 52 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in two hours and 54 minutes.

By winning his second ATP Challenger career title following his maiden triumph on home soil in Todi, Darderi earned $10,840 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points.
