BUENOS AIRES/STARNBERG, January 15, 2024
Gonzalo Bueno from Peru has become the first teenager of 2024 to capture a title on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 19-year-old Trujillo native lifted his maiden trophy of the $41,000 Challenger AAT de TCA 1 held at the Tenis Club Argentino in Buenos Aires, becoming the second youngest Peruvian tennis player to achieve this feat. The first was Jaime Yzaga, who was crowned in Bahía in 1985 at the age of 18 and one month.
Bueno battled past Dmitry Popko of Kazakhstan 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4) in Sunday’s singles final between two qualifiers. The World No. 415 capitalized on six of his 12 break-point opportunities and saved three match points in the third set to seal victory in two hours and 30 minutes.

“This is what I prepare for, these battles. I am very happy to win here with the people who give me an extra boost, it motivates me,” said Bueno.
Bueno pockted $5,660 in prize money as well as 50 ATP Ranking points. Like most of the players, the young South American will stay in the capital city of Argentina for this week’s Challenger AAT de TCA 2.
