World No. 120 and fifth seed Thiago Monteiro advanced to the quarterfinals of the Punta del Este Open following a 6-2, 6-3 win over last week’s Buenos Aires Challenger AAT de TCA 2 champion Facundo Bagnis of Argentina on Thursday. The 29-year-old Brazilian aims to replicate his performance from the Uruguay Open, where he reached the final a few months ago. Monteiro’s next opponent will be the Argentine Roman Andres Burruchaga.
The Punta del Este Open, the largest ATP Challenger Tour tournament in the history of the city of Maldonado, Uruguay, is being held this week at clay courts of the Cantegril Country Club. The event offers a total prize money of $82,000.
