World-class doubles action is not to be missed at the Delray Beach Open, coming February 9-18 at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center. Two of the world’s Top 10 doubles players and the sixth-leading team will be in town, along with four of the world’s Top 20 singles players and legends of the game for the ATP Tour, ATP Champions Tour and Women’s Tennis Challenge events.
The top doubles team in the field is Santiago Gonzalez and Neal Skupski. Currently ranked No. 8, Skupski was runner-up here in 2019, is a former doubles world No. 1 and current holder of the Wimbledon doubles crown. He is pairing with new partner Gonzalez, who last year, at the age of 40, reached his career-high ranking of No. 7 and won the two biggest titles of his career at the Masters 1000 events in Miami and Paris. He is currently ranked No. 9 and will turn 41 the week following the Delray Beach Open.
Jan Zielinski just won his first Grand Slam title last week, saving championship point against Skupski and his partner to win the Australian Open mixed doubles title. Zielinski also found success in the men’s doubles Down Under with DBO partner Hugo Nys, reaching the quarterfinals. They are currently No. 6 in the ATP team race. They fell to Australian Open doubles semifinalist Dominik Koepfer, who is playing singles and doubles in Delray.
Gonzalo Escobar, who won here in 2021, is back this year with new partner Aleksandr Nedovyesov, himself a doubles finalist here in 2022. Last year’s runner-up Reese Stalder returns this year to try to go a step further with new partner Evan King.
Currently world-ranked No. 9, Taylor Fritz leads the singles entry list along with American compatriots Frances Tiafoe (No. 14) and Tommy Paul (No. 15). Frenchman Adrian Mannarino rounds out the quartet of Top 20 players entered at No. 17.
Fritz, last year’s singles champion, will begin his title defense at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Paul’s first match is scheduled for the Thursday, Feb. 15 Day Session with Tiafoe later that evening at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale at DelrayBeachOpen.com.
Opening weekend of the Delray Beach Open starts with the ATP Champions Tour Legends event Feb. 9-11 that features six-time DBO champions Bob and Mike Bryan, the most successful doubles team in the history of the sport, former world No. 2 Tommy Haas, former Delray Beach champions Ivo Karlovic and Sam Querrey, local pros Jesse Levine and Scoville Jenkins, and past French Open champions Luke and Murphy Jensen.
Also featured opening weekend is the Women’s Tennis Challenge at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, an exhibition between former Wimbledon finalist and world No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard and 17-year-old current junior Wimbledon champion Clervie Ngounoue.
