The third and final week of the hard-court swing on the Canary Islands is in full swing, as main draw action at the Tenerife Challenger 3 kicked off on Monday.

Local wild card entry Martin Landaluce benefited from the retirement of fellow Spaniard and No. 3 seed Pablo Llamas Ruiz. The 18-year-old Madrid native was leading 7-6(6), 1-0 when Llamas Ruiz was forced to stop playing due to a neck injury.

“I haven’t had much luck with tie-breaks in Tenerife,” Landaluce said a few days ago. “When you get to the decisive points, the details make the difference, and I have to raise my level at the right moment. Personally, I feel like I have the tennis to compete on the ATP Challenger Tour, and after a first year to get used to it, I’ll finally be able to win more matches.”

Up next for Landaluce at the ATP Challenger Tour 75 event will be either Spanish qualifier Carlos Lopez Montagud or Alessandro Giannessi of Italy.
