Virtanen Successfully Defends Lugano Challenger Crown

Otto Virtanen clinched the title of the fourth edition of the Citta di Lugano Challenger. The No. 2 seed and defending champion of the hard-court event fought past German qualifier Daniel Masur 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3) in Sunday’s singles final held at the Padiglione Conza in Lugano, Switzerland.

Lugano, situated in the southern part of Switzerland, is a picturesque city renowned for its stunning lakeside setting, charming old town, and Mediterranean flair. Nestled between the majestic peaks of the Swiss Alps and the serene waters of Lake Lugano, this vibrant city offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and modern amenities.

Virtanen advanced to the championship match with wins over local wild card entry Remy Bertola, Turkish qualifier Cem Ilkel, sixth-seeded Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Rudolf Molleker of Germany.

The 22-year-old fired 16 aces and won 77 per cent of his first-service points. He broke Masur’s serve three times and saved two match points in the tie-break of the final set to seal victory in two hours and 41 minutes.

By winning his fifth ATP Challenger Tour career title, his second of the season following his triumph in Pau, France, collected €10,200 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points.
