PARIS, May 20, 2016
Four men will celebrate their Grand Slam debut in the singles competition of Roland Garros: two Spaniards, one Austrian as well as one youngster from Serbia.
Roberto Carballés-Baena, who defeated Marius Copil 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and Jordi Samper-Montana, who beat Aslan Karatsev 6-2, 6-3, will join the strong Spanish Armada in Paris.
Gerald Melzer dismissed Matteo Donati in the final round of the qualifying 6-4, 6-4 and 20-year-old Laslo Djere took out Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
There are also some veterans, who found their way back. 37-year-old Radek Stepanek defeated Yoshihito Nishikoka 6-3, 6-2.
“I also had to qualify in Madrid and Rome. Later, I was told being the second oldest player after Jimmy Connors to win a main draw match at an ATP Masters 1000 event. That’s very special to hear, as I have been always keen to learn from the past generation. Guys like Jimmy are great idols and fantastic for our sport. I liked his enthusiasm and passion on court,” Stepanek told.
The Germans also improved their line-up with Tobias Kamke beating Andrea Arnaboldi 7-5, 6-4. It will be the first major for Kamke since the Australian Open in 2015. He played his last main draw match at the French Open in 2014.
Dustin Brown will also return through a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Daniel Brands. Brown will appear for the third time in the main draw, the first time since 2014.
Jan-Lennard Struff, runner-up at last week’s ATP Challenger in Heilbronn, beat Andrej Martin 6-4, 7-6.
The champion of the Neckarcup also made it into the main draw, as Nikoloz Basilashvili overcame Jared Donaldson 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
