Orlando Luz continued his fine run of form this week on home soil by reaching the quarterfinals of the Circuito Banco BRB/Engie De Tenis Profesional – Sao Leo Open. The World No. 371, who entered the main draw of the $82,000 ATP Challenger Tour clay-court tournament in Sao Leopoldo as an alternate, battled past fellow Brazilian Pedro Sakamoto 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in Thursday’s second-round match.

Luz, a winner of nine ITF Pro Circuit singles titles, withstood 11 aces and broke his rival’s serve three times to prevail after two hours and 18 minutes.

“I’m very happy to be able to play close to my fans who have been making a lot of noise to cheer me on during the match. Many of those who are here helped me at the beginning of my career, and I’m glad to be able to show beautiful tennis to them and continue advancing in the competition,” said Luz.

The 26-year-old Carzinho native will next take on Paraguayan wild card entry Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, who knocked off No. 6 seed Genaro Alberto Olivieri 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes.

In other action, Enzo Couacaud of France outlasted Andrea Collarini from Argentina 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The 29-year-old won 71 per cent of his first-service points and 54 per cent of the total points played to advance in two hours and 25 minutes.

Up next for Couacaud will be third-seeded Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli, who also had to go the distance in his match against Israeli qualifier Daniel Cukierman. The World No. 112 emerged victorious, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 21 minutes.
