Janvier Stops Local Boy To Reach Quarterfinals At Morelos Open

Two Frenchmen headlined Thursday’s second-round action at the Morelos Open presentado por Metaxchange in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Maxime Janvier ended the run of 18-year-old local wild card entry Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez with a hard-fought 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3 win.

The World No. 239 from Creil hit 11 aces and won 73 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in two hours and 15 minutes.

“I am very tired,” Janvier said right after the match. “He is a very good player. It was a very nice match against a Mexican player in front of a fair crowd. I am very happy to have won this match today.”

Janvier, who is seeking his second triumph on the ATP Challenger Tour following his title win in Casablanca, Morocco eight years ago, will next take on his compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The No. 5 seed defeated US-American Aidan Mayo 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 35 minutes.

In other action, Beibit Zhukayev of Kazakhsatan also booked his spot in the stage of the last eight at the $82,000 hard-court event. The No. 8 seed edged past Christian Langmo from the United States 6-3, 7-6(5). Zhukayev withstood 13 aces and broke his rival two times to prevail after one hour and 18 minutes.

Up next for the 23-year-old Aktau native will be fourth favourite Adam Walton. The Australian beat Antoine Bellier of Switzerland 7-6(11), 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes.
