ROME/STARNBERG, April 28, 2024
Alejandro Moro Canas clinched his maiden title on the Pro Circuit by winning the title of the Roma Tennis Garden ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event. The 23-year-old Spaniard defeated Lithuanian qualifier Vilius Gaubas 7-5, 6-3 in Sunday’s championship match at the Tennis Club Garden in Rome, Italy.
Starting his campaign as an alternate in the main draw, Moro Canas advanced to the final with wins in the top half of the draw over top seed Zsombor Piros of Hungary, Dutch qualifier Ryan Nijboer, No. 5 seed Jesper de Jong from the Netherlands and home favourite Stefano Travaglia.
Moro Canas, who stunned 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem in his tour-level main draw debut at the BMW Open in Munich two weeks ago, struck five aces and won 59 per cent of his first-service points to secure a well-deserved victory that marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. The encounter lasted two hours and six minutes.
