The clay swing on the ATP Challenger Tour in Brazil continues this week with the inaugural Santos Brasil Tennis Cup being held at the Tenis Clube de Santos. The coastal city of Santos is located in the state of Sao Paulo, known for its rich maritime history, beautiful beaches, and bustling port. As one of the oldest cities in Brazil, Santos has a unique charm that attracts both tourists and locals alike.
All eight seeded players of the $41,000 tournament advanced to the second round. Top seed Dmitry Popko won his opening match on Tuesday 6-0, 7-5 over Argentine alternate Guido Ivan Justo. The World No. 223 from Kazakhstan hit seven aces and broke his rival’s serve six times to seal victory in one hour and 26 minutes.
Up next for Popko will be Hernan Casanova of Argentina, who defeated Tunisian qualifier Aziz Ouakaa 6-2, 7-5 in on e hour and 50 minutes.
The bottom half of the draw is led by Santiago Rodriguez Taverna. The second-seeded Argentine beat Nicolas Zanellato of Brazil 6-2, 6-4 and will next take on his compatriot and qualifier Leonardo Aboian.
The other seeds, who managed to book their spots in the second round are Renzo Olivo of Argentina, Hady Habib of Lebanon, Alvaro Guillen Meza from Ecuador, last week’s Brasil Tennis Open champion Ergi Kirkin of Turkey, Paraguayan youngster Adolfo Daniel Vallejo and home favourite Pedro Sakamoto.
