JJ Wolf has reached the quarterfinals of the Cranbrook Tennis Classic. The top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 hard-court event, being held at the Cranbrook Tennis Complex in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, defeated Yuta Shimizu of Japan 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Wolf converted five of his seven break-point chances to secure victory in one hour and 17 minutes. Up next for the World No. 115 will be fellow US-American Stefan Kozlov, who benefited from the retirement of Tsung-Lin Wu from Chinese Taipei. The qualifier was leading 5-7, 6-3, 4-0 when Wu was forced to stop playing due to cramping.

Local wild card entry Learner Tien caused the upset of the day by knocking out No. 6 seed Yunchaokete Bu from China 0-6, 7-5, 6-0. The 18-year-old lefty from California withstood 10 aces and broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail after two hours and one minute.

Tien will next challenge Philip Sekulic from Australia, who battled past Ethan Quinn from the United States 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) in the longest match of the day. The encounter lasted three hours and 14 minutes.
