Roberto Carballes Baena has clinched the title of the 30th edition of the BRAWO Open. The top seed of the ATP Challenger Tour 125 clay-court event in Braunschweig, Germany defeated fifth-seeded Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1, 6-3 in Saturday’s singles final.

Carballes Baena saved all eight break points he faced and capitalized on four of his own seven break-point chances. The 31-year-old Spaniard won 58 per cent of the total points played to seal victory in one hour and 22 minutes.

The World No. 64 claimed his 12th ATP Challenger Tour career title, his first of the season. Carballes Baena pocketed €20,300 in prize money as well as 125 ATP Ranking points.

Dutchmen prevail in doubles

Earlier in the day, Sander Arends and Robin Haase captured the doubles title. The No. 2 seeds from the Netherlands outlasted the tournament’s top favourites N. Sriram Balaji of India and Gonzalo Escobar of Ecuador 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in one hour and 25 minutes.

By winning their first team title, Arends and Haase split €8,450 in prize money and collected 125 ATP Doubles Ranking points.

Players from 25 countries

Tournament director Volker Jäcke was very pleased with the anniversary edition of the Braunschweig tennis tournament: “We had 32 national and international top players, aged between 16 and 40, from 25 countries participating in the qualification and main draw. Fifteen Germans competed in singles and doubles, but unfortunately, only Henri Squire reached the singles quarterfinals, while Nicola Kuhn and the 16-year-old Niels McDonald made it to the doubles quarterfinals. The field of participants was more international and balanced than ever, and the matches were played at a very high level – including the finals. Once again, a piece of ATP Challenger tennis history was made at the 30th edition.”
