For the second day in a row, poor weather conditions led to matches at Roland Garros being suspended several times throughout Day 10. Only two fourth round matches of the women’s draw could be completed. Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was upset by world number 102 Tsvetana Pironkova, losing 6-2, 3-6, 3-6. The 27-year-old from Poland produced 30 unforced errors and only 94 of the 195 total points played.
Radwanska was not happy about playing in the rain on Tuesday.
“I’m just so surprised and angry, that we have to play in the rain. I mean, it’s not a 10,000 tournament. It’s a Grand Slam. How can you allow players to play in the rain? I cannot play in those conditions,” she told afterwards.
“I don’t think they really care what we think. I think they care about other things, I guess. So, I’m just pissed. I just cannot play in that conditions. I’m not healthy enough, as I had a hand surgery a few years ago and I am not able to play with those kind of balls on that kind of court.”
Pironkova was happy with the win, reaching the stage of the last 16 in Paris for the first time.
“I could say that I’m surprised, but I think coming to the tournament I was in a very good shape. My results in the previous tournaments didn’t show it, but I was feeling good. Every time someone from the media or my friends asked me, How are you feeling? I was like, it’s strange, but I feel very good. So obviously the time came, and right now I showed that actually I’m feeling in a good form,” the 28-year-old Bulgarian smiled.
Sam Stosur knocked out sixth seed Simona Halep, winning 7-6, 6-3. The Romanian was also unhappy about the conditions.
“I have no words. It was impossible to play, in my opinion. And to play tennis matches during the rain I think it’s a bit too much. But everyone was in the same situation, and she was stronger than me today,” Halep told.
“I felt like each time we went back out on court I was ready and I was focused and knew exactly what I wanted to do. I needed the time to be able to do it, and thankfully, I didn’t take long today. That was a great thing for me,” Stosur was pleased.
Fourth round matches of the men’s draw had to be suspended in the afternoon. World number one Novak Djokovic is leading 6-3, 6-4, 4-1 over Roberto Bautista-Agut. David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych are on serve with the Spaniard being 2-1 up. Ernests Gulbis is one break up over David Goffin and the encounter between Dominic Thiem and Marcel Granollers was interrupted at 6-2, 6-7.
