ATLANTA/STARNBERG, July 29, 2024

Yoshihito Nishioka clinched the title of the 2024 Atlanta Open. The 28-year-old Japanese outlasted No. 4 seed Jordan Thompson of Australia 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 in a rain-affected singles final on Sunday.

Nishioka saved 10 of the 11 break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own six break-point chances to seal victory in two hours and 40 minutes.

“This is an amazing feeling,” Nishioka said. “Today’s battle, it was huge coming back. I think the rain was very bad for Thompson. I just got some luck from the rain. At the end, [I was] playing amazing. Third title, which I couldn’t believe at the beginning of the year, so this is an amazing feeling.”

Nishioka secured his third career ATP Tour title, his first of the season. All three have come on hard court. The Mie native has become the first champion in the history of the Atlanta Open not coming from the United States (10) or Australia (3). Nishioka earned $114,970 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points. He returns to the Top 50 for the first time since January this year.
