PARIS/STARNBERG, July 29, 2024
Novak Djokovic of Serbia continued his pursuit of a long-sought gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday by defeating long-time rival Rafael Nadal from Spain 6-1, 6-4, adding another chapter to their historic rivalry.
Playing once again on Philippe-Chatrier, Djokovic and Nadal faced off in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Their most recent encounter on this court in 2022 saw Nadal secure a four-set quarter-final victory at Roland Garros. However, this time, Djokovic, who recently reached the Wimbledon final, emerged victorious.
“Back in 2006, I don’t think we would have thought we would be playing against each other on the same court at the Olympics,” Djokovic said. “So I think we will appreciate this match very much. I think our rivalry and I think for the sport itself. I think there was a lot of attention and interest directed from sports towards us. It is unfortunate for him that he wasn’t at his best, but I did everything I could to make him feel uncomfortable.”
Djokovic will next take on Germany’s Dominik Koepfer, who fought past Italian Matteo Arnaldi in three sets.
