GRAN CANARIA, August 2, 2024

The semi-finals of the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria will be an all-Spanish affair as four home favourites advanced on Friday in Maspalomas.

Top seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro fought past sixth-seeded Russian Polina Kudermetova 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. The World No. 77, who is seeking her fourth title of the season this week on the third-largest of the Canary Islands, struck six aces and won 67 per cent of her first-service points to secure victory in two hours and 46 minutes.

“I am from Spain, so Gran Canaria is a special tournament for me,” said Bouzas Maneiro. “It’s great to play in front of a home crowd with good people around. The organization is very fine. I am really enjoying my time here. I love Gran Canaria, in particular the weather and the beaches.”

The 21-year-old Galician will next take on Andrea Lazaro Garcia, who beat Fanny Stollar of Hungary 7-6(4), 6-1 in one hour and 37 minutes.

Bassols Ribera enjoys her time in the Maspalomas Dune system

In the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Marina Bassols Ribera also needed to go the distance in her match against eighth-seeded Croatian Lea Boskovic before winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. The World No. 119 capitalized on seven of her 18 break-point chances to prevail after two hours and 45 minutes.

Bassols Ribera, born in Catalonia, is pleased to be back in Gran Canaria. “Yesterday, I went to the dunes in Maspalomas. The sunset was beautiful and spectacular. It was a very nice experience and it’s great to return to the island,” the 24-year-old said.

The Maspalomas Dune system is a remarkable natural wonder in the Canary Islands, celebrated for its stunning beauty and diverse ecosystems. Spanning 400 hectares, this area is protected by the Canarian government as a Nature Reserve of special value. It features a spectacular beach, a dynamic sand dune system, a palm grove, and a brackish lagoon. This unique blend of desert and oasis is located at the southern tip of Gran Canaria and is bordered by the renowned Maspalomas resort.

Up next for Bassols Ribera will be No. 4 seed Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, who ended the run of German qualifier Lena Papadakis with a solid 6-1, 6-1 win in 51 minutes.

In Saturday’s doubles final, top seeds Angelica Moratelli of Italy and US-American Sabrina Santamaria will take on second favourites Stollar and Katarzyna Piter from Poland.
