Novak Djokovic reached his first Olympic final on his fourth appearance in a semifinal at the Games, beating Lorenzo Musetti to set up a clash with Carlos Alcaraz – re-match of last month’s Wimbledon final – in Sunday’s men’s singles gold medal match.

“It’s a huge relief because I’ve never got to the Olympic finals,” said Djokovic. “Three out of four of the Olympic Games that I’ve played, I played in the semis and won bronze in the first one in Beijing, but after that, I kind of failed to overcome that hurdle. So just to secure a higher medal for the first time for my country, whatever happens on Sunday, it’s a huge pride, honour and happiness. It’s why I celebrated the way I did, and I still feel like I need to celebrate that because it’s a big success. I’m going to go for gold on Sunday, there is no doubt about it, but this is a big deal.”

Alcaraz romped to victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the day’s first semifinal, before Iga Swiatek bounced back from defeat in the women’s singles semifinals on Thursday to win the bronze medal with a triumph against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

“It’s amazing. Honestly me and my sister were raised in this spirit that the Olympics are the most important tournament,” said Swiatek. “That’s why it wasn’t the easiest tournament. This makes it even better. I’m proud of myself I could do it. I’m happy [my Dad] was here to see it. This is for sure a great place for me to be and play. I’m happy that besides Roland Garros titles, I could add another success to it.”

Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova/Tomas Machac ended Friday’s action by defeating China, P.R.’s Wang Xinyu/Zhang Zhizhen to win gold in mixed doubles.
