GRAN CANARIA, August 4, 2024

Nuria Parrizas-Diaz has clinched the title of the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria. The No. 4 seed of the clay-court event held at the Conde Jackson Tennis Club in Maspalomas defeated Andrea Lazaro Garcia in an all-Spanish singles final on Sunday afternoon 6-4, 6-3.

In an exciting encounter, Parrizas-Diaz won 55 per cent of her first-service points and converted six of her eight break-point opportunities to seal victory in one hour and 28 minutes.

The World No. 144 captured her 23rd career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour. It’s Parrizas-Diaz’s second triumph of the season following her second career victory at WTA 125 level in Canberra, Australia last January.

Players happy to return to Gran Canaria next year

Lazaro Garcia, who competed in her first ITF World Tennis Tour W100 final, congratulated her opponent and thanked the organizers. She expressed her appreciation for “everyone who supports me” and praising Gran Canaria as “a spectacular place for both tennis and vacations.”

Parrizas-Diaz shared her affection for the tournament, stating, “This tournament is very special to me. I feel at home here, and I leave with much more confidence. I will be back next year.”

Elena Álamo, second deputy mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, said, “It is an honor to host such high-level competitions and to showcase Maspalomas not only as a tourist destination but also as a sports and competition destination.”

Loli Saavedra of Grupo DISA expressed satisfaction with being part of the tournament, highlighting its “significant impact on tourism, which benefits the islands, and our commitment to supporting women’s sports, fulfilling our dual goal of supporting both the Canary Islands and women’s sports.”

Oti Santana, director of the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria 2024, emphasized the significance of having an all-Spanish final, stating, “It is no coincidence that Spanish tennis has produced so many notable players. This is the result of the efforts of federations, organizers, and sponsors who support ITF and ATP tournaments in Spain, contributing to Spain’s status as a global tennis powerhouse.”
