“We both served really well under pressure,” said Fritz after the match, which lasted one hour and 35 minutes. “Ben served incredibly well, so I didn’t have to hit any volleys. That was huge.”
Shelton added: “I was just having fun out there to be honest. It makes life pretty easy when you’re playing with a guy who is moving like Taylor is right now. Pretty light on his feet, and we had a lot of fun. Our first time playing together, and I think the chemistry was pretty good.”
Earlier, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Grigor Dimitrov earned victories for Team Europe. Tsitsipas beat Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 21 minutes and Dimitrov fought past Alejandro Tabilo 7-6(4), 7-6(2) in two hours and 15 minutes.
In the opening singles match, Francisco Cerundolo upset Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes to score the first point for Team World.
