Campinas Challenger Quarterfinals Are Set

The quarterfinals of the Campeonato Internacional De Tenis presented by Santander are set without any Brazilians left in the singles draw of the ATP Challenger Tour 100 tournament.

Pedro Sakamoto fought hard but ultimately lost in a three-set match to Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru, a former World No. 60, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in more than three hours of play.

Varillas, champion at the Campinas Challenger in 2019, expressed his enthusiasm about the tournament and confidence in his form: “I have great memories from this place… I feel better with each day and I’m ready for what’s next.”

Qualifier Karue Sell also put up a strong fight but was defeated by No. 4 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 in one hour and 50 minutes.

Matheus Pucinelli de Almeda, the last Brazilian left in the singles draw, was eliminated by Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera in straight sets 7-6(6), 6-1, despite strong support from the home crowd.

In other action, 20-year-old Alvaro Guillen Meza from Ecuador defeated the experienced Bolivian Hugo Dellien, who was once ranked 64th in the world. Meza emerged victorious, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, showcasing his potential as an up-and-coming talent.

The quartet is joined by US-American Tristan Boyer, Argentines Roman Andres Burruchaga and Juan Pablo Ficovich as well as young Bolivian talent Juan Prado Angelo.

Angelo, a former Junior World No. 1 junior player stated: “I’m very happy to have passed the qualifying and reached the quarterfinals. It’s a tough tournament, and I hope to keep progressing.”
