Paul sent down six aces and won 70 per cent of his second-service points. The 27-year-old from New Jersey broke Dimitrov’s serve four times to succeed in one hour and 25 minutes.

“It’s a very special place for me,” said Paul, who is running for a spot in the ATP Tour Finals in Turin. “This is where I got my first title a few years ago and to come out and play the level of tennis I did this week, it’s been a dream.”
