JOINVILLE/STARNBERG, December 8, 2024
Australian Kaylah McPhee, currently ranked World No. 451, has claimed her first career singles title on the Pro Circuit. The milestone victory came at the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis de Joinville ITF World Tennis Tour W15 event in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The 26-year-old McPhee has overcome a series of surgeries and injuries, enduring a two-and-a-half-year absence from tennis before returning to achieve her dream of becoming a champion.
In Sunday’s final, played before a packed crowd at the indoor courts of the Joinville Tennis Club, McPhee defeated Argentina’s Victoria Bosio 6-3, 6-4. Bosio has also struggled with injuries this season. This victory marked a significant breakthrough for McPhee after five previous final appearances without a win, including a loss just the previous week to Luiza Fullana in Ribeirao Preto.
“I feel amazing today. Honestly, it’s a wonderful sensation to lift a trophy, something I had never experienced before. I’m very proud of myself. After nearly three years away, being able to feel that my body is ready to play well again and finally win a title is great,” said McPhee, who did not lose a single set throughout the week. “I will always keep Joinville in my memory,” she concluded
McPhee earns $2,160 in prize money and 15 WTA Rankings points, which are expected to elevate her ranking to around World No. 284, moving closer to her career-high of 199th in 2022.
