TENERIFE/GRAN CANARIA, January 2, 2025

Top-level tennis is set to return to the Canary Islands, which will become the vibrant hub of the ATP Challenger Tour for two consecutive weeks. From February 2 to February 16, the hard courts of the Abama Tennis Academy will host two ATP Challenger 75 tournaments.

Organizer MEF Tennis Events proudly confirms its tournaments in Tenerife, the largest and most populous island of the archipelago. Renowned among athletes for its climate, venues, organization and infrastructure, the Tenerife Challenger once again secures its place in the international tennis calendar. For 2025, the prize money for each event will increase to $100,000, adding further prestige to these competitions.

The tournaments will also highlight a collaboration between MEF Tennis Events and the Federación Canaria de Tenis, granting wild cards to the most promising talents from the islands. Additionally, members of the Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) and players affiliated with Canary Islands tennis clubs will benefit from a 50% discount on tickets and weekly passes. Kids’ Days, designed for local children, will also be a key feature of the events.

The Enthusiasm of the Federación Canaria de Tenis

After hosting 12 ATP Challenger tournaments and a WTA 250 event that was awarded the “Best Tournament in the World” for its category in 2021, the partnership between MEF Tennis Events and the Canary Islands continues to thrive.

“The tradition carried forward by Marcello Marchesini over the years extends beyond the players on the court to the numerous passionate fans who regularly attend these tournaments. Of course, I also think of the many champions who have competed here, including Brandon Nakashima, who returned to the top 50 in the world after winning the tournament,” says José Sepulveda, president of the Federación Canaria de Tenis.

“We are particularly proud of the wild card agreement for the 2025 tournaments, which will allow some young talents to experience the Challenger circuit level. This opportunity will be offered to players who have already made their mark on national and international stages—it will be a privilege for them. As for the state of the federation, the data shows we’re on the right track. Canary tennis has a rich tradition, boasting names like David Marrero and Carla Suarez Navarro. I’m confident we’ll see our players competing at high levels again in both the ATP and WTA Tour.”

The tournaments will once again be held at the Abama Tennis Academy in Guía de Isora, a destination renowned for its luxury accommodations at “Las Terrazas de Abama Suites” and “Los Jardines de Abama Suites,” fine dining, a shopping center with a variety of restaurants, a kids’ camp, and the prestigious Dave Thomas-designed golf course.

MEF Tennis Events in Tenerife – A Story of Vision and Success

“It was the end of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, when we decided to take a gamble on what seemed like madness: bringing top-tier tennis to the Canary Islands. Five years later, we can say that this ambition has proven to be the right one,” says Marcello Marchesini, president of MEF Tennis Events.

“Over the past five years, thanks especially to local authorities, Tenerife Tourism, and the Canary Islands government, we’ve organized 12 ATP Challenger events and a WTA 250 tournament, which was recognized as the best event of its category worldwide.

“Our current goals? To support Spanish tennis, particularly in the Canary Islands, by rapidly developing local talent through wild cards for professional tennis exposure. Secondly, to promote the breathtaking beauty of Tenerife, including through the tournaments we will organize in Italy in 2025.”
