BRISBANE/STARNBERG, January 5, 2025
Aryna Sabalenka triumphed at the Brisbane International presented by Evie on Sunday, defeating Russian qualifier Polina Kudermetova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a thrilling 106-minute final.
Sabalenka showcased resilience and precision to claim the title, solidifying her preparations for the Australian Open, where she will aim for a third consecutive championship.
The match began with Sabalenka struggling on her first serve, winning just 65 per cent of points in the opening set and tallying seven winners against 12 unforced errors. However, a pivotal moment came in the second set at 1-2, where she saved a break point with a masterful angled slice forehand drop shot, eventually breaking Kudermetova’s serve.
Seeded No. 1 in Brisbane, Sabalenka’s road to the title included victories over Renata Zarazua, Yulia Putintseva, Marie Bouzkova, Mirra Andreeva, and Kudermetova. This victory marks her fourth title on Australian soil and sets her up as a strong contender in the upcoming Grand Slam.

“That’s 100 per cent great to have the variety in your game,” Sabalenka said. “Whenever you have to switch to Plan B, you have something to play with. I really think having those tricky shots, that slice, changing the rhythm, it’s going to really bring a lot of benefits to my game.
“Facing someone who is really aggressive, but who can have a great touch, it can be frustrating. There is always something to improve. I’m always hoping for new things.”
