PUNTA DEL ESTE/STARNBERG, January 27, 2025
Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan triumphed at the second edition of the Punta del Este Open, defeating Chilean seventh seed Tomas Barrios Vera 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a grueling final on Sunday.
The match lasted nearly three hours, with Galan showcasing resilience and determination to secure the fifth ATP Challenger Tour title of his career. His previous titles came in San Benedetto (2018), Lima (2020), Sarasota, and Concepción (both in 2022).
“It’s been a long time since I’ve won a tournament,” Galan said with a smile during the trophy ceremony.
Reflecting on the match, the champion remarked, “It was a tough battle because we’ve known each other for a very long time.”
Galan, who began his clay-court campaign in Punta del Este, will continue his South American swing next week at the tournament in Piracicaba, Brazil.
After congratulating Barrios Vera, Galan expressed gratitude to his brother, Sat, who accompanies him on tour.
The Punta del Este Open, now in its second year, offered $100,000 in total prize money and awarded 75 ATP Ranking points to the winner.
