Argentina became the first team to book a place in the 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers second round after Mariano Navone recovered from a set down to defeat Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in the decisive fifth match of his nation’s clash with Norway in Oslo. The 3-2 victory sees Argentina advance to a tie against 2024 runners-up Netherlands in September.

“I don’t know what to say. I’m grateful for the team. I’m enjoying this party, it’s incredible,”  said Navone after his first Davis Cup match win. “Argentinians are very passionate people. I’ve never had a feeling like today. This is the most happy day of my life. Look at this [the Argentinian fans] – it’s unbelievable.”

Just one of the eight ties that began on Friday is level going into day two, with Japan’s clash with Great Britain tied at 1-1 after the opening day. Among the other ties, USA recorded two comfortable victories against Chinese Taipei, Australia opened up a 2-0 lead against Sweden, and Serbia lead Denmark in Copenhagen thanks to an upset win for Hamad Medjedovic over Holger Rune.

The four remaining ties in the Davis Cup Qualifiers first Round begin on Saturday, including France’s home tie against Brazil and Canada’s match-up with Hungary in Montreal.

“Throughout my career it has been the week I look forward to the most,” Canada’s Vasek Pospisil said. “There’s more pressure. More on the line and a whole team of guys and support staff to enjoy wins with – and we’ve had great success over the years. Because we’ve done well, there are amazing emotions that come with that, and that’s something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
